Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust

Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust was established by the Ministry of Defence, English Heritage and other local authorities in the mid-1980s.

Its purpose was to take responsibility for the conservation and future sustainable use of historic buildings, docks and land formerly owned by the Ministry of Defence, and which have a connection with HM Naval Base Portsmouth.  These cover a geographical area stretching to Calshot in the west and Sandown, Isle of Wight, in the south and east.

The Trust’s main function is that of landlord and guardian of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The majority of buildings and structures in the Historic Dockyard are Grade 1 and Grade 2* Listed Buildings. The Trust is responsible for keeping the historic buildings in a good state of repair and for refurbishing empty or redundant buildings for appropriate new commercial uses.  This ensures that the historic buildings and structures are safeguarded for the enjoyment of future generations.

Since its formation in 1986 by the Ministry of Defence and Portsmouth City Council, the Trust has been responsible for over 20 major building projects at a total cost exceeding £90m.
